This tour uses just two hotels and two ground companies. The tour uses the experienced local guides from Asa Wright Nature Centre, and Newton George or William Trim on Tobago. This is a recommended itinerary, but days can easily be swapped if requested, or other destinations visited.
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Port of Spain Airport. Transfer to AWNC
Day 2: Asa Wright Nature Centre
Tour of grounds of Asa Wright Nature Centre and familiarisation with its many colourful species. The Asa Wright feeders bring in many of the local hummingbirds, including Tufted Coquette, Blue-chinned Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin and Copper-rumped Hummingbird. Other birds which can be seen in the grounds include; Golden-headed and White-bearded Manakins, Channel-billed Toucan, White Hawk, Ornate Hawk-eagle, Golden-olive and Chestnut Woodpeckers, Collared, Violaceous and White-tailed Trogons, Black- tailed Tityra, six species of Tanager, Purple and Green Honeycreepers, Crested Oropendola, Spectacled Owl, Blue-headed Parrot, Bearded Bellbird and Blue-crowned Motmot. The grounds are also home to the bizarre Oilbird.
Day 3: Blanchisseuse
A full day’s outing along the 20 kilometers of road, wooded on both sides for the main part, all the way from the Asa Wright nature centre to the seaside village of Blanchisseuse. This is excellent for both Black and Turkey Vultures and White Hawk, Lilac-tailed Parrotlet, Little Tinamou, Green Kingfisher, Stripe-breasted Spinetail, Long-billed Gnatwren and Black-faced Ant-thrush as well as Trogons and Tangaers.. At the nearby shore, Brown Pelican, Black Skimmer, Nearctic waders, and perhaps Magnificent Frigatebird and Red-billed Tropicbird.
Day 4: Heights of Aripo
A full day here; Trinidad &Tobago’s highest mountain at 3,000ft, where we should see White Hawk, Common Black Hawk, Violaceous and White-tailed Trogons, Purple Honeycreepers, Turquoise and Speckled Tanagers.
Day 5: Dunston Cave Oilbirds & Caroni Swamp
We will spend the morning walking to and from the Dunston Cave Oilbirds. After lunch we will drive to Caroni Swamp and take a boat out into the mangroves and observe one of the world’s most spectacular birding sights – several thousand scarlet coming into roost on a few small islets.
Day 6: Aripo Savannah
Today we will drive through the Aripo Savannah and get to grips with the grassland birds of Trinidad with specialities such as Savannah Hawk, Wattled Jacanas, Green-rumped Parrotlet, Yellow-chinned Spinetail, White-headed Marsh and Pied Water Tyrants, Grey Kingbird, White-winged Swallow and Red-breasted Blackbird as well as grassquits, plovers, cuckoos and blackbirds galore.
Day 7: Nariva Swamp
A full day spent at Nariva Swamp searching for kingfishers, gallinules, et al. With luck here or at Caroni we may see Little and Mangrove Cuckoos and Red-capped Cardinal, Boat-billed and Cocoi Herons, Silvered Antbird, Pygmy Kingfisher, Pinnated Bittern, Limpkin, Azure Gallinule, Dark-billed and Mangrove Cuckoos, Greater Ani, Straight-billed Woodcreeper and Fork-tailed Flycatcher.
Overnight: Asa Wright Nature Centre [All but one Night]
Day 8: Depart for Tobago
Afternoon free at Cuffie River that offers some of the the finest in bird-watching in Tobago. Walk in the surroundings and encounter some 30 species of tropical birds before Dinner! Some of the most sought-after exotic birds such as the Blue-Backed Manakin, Ruby Topaz Hummingbird, White-tailed Sabrewing, Collared Trogan, Blue-Crowned Mot Mot and Yellow-Legged Thrush.
Day 9: Little Tobago
A full day visiting Little Tobago just offshore where, apart from passerines etc. we should see many seabirds including Brown and Red-footed Boobies, Red-billed Tropicbird, Bridled and Sooty Terns and Magnificent Frigatebird.
Day 10: Tobago Rainforest
A full day spent visiting the forest around Gilpin Trace in the hope of encountering species not found on Trinidad, including White-tailed Sabrewing, Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Blue-backed Manakin, White-fringed Antwren and Venezuelan Flycatcher.
Day 11: Buccoo Marsh
Another full day looking for specialities of Tobago at a marsh which provides habitat for a wide variety of herons, Pied-billed and Least Grebes, Fulvous Whistling-ducks, and flycatchers.
Overnight: Cuffie River Nature Retreat
Day 12: Departure
Morning free at Cuffie River with a last chance to find those Tobagan specialities. Depart Tobago.
